We love a good ol’ random act of kindness, so we were excited to hear about a project to hand out little
knitted ducks around the city.
The creative types at Seeded, Southsea’s wool, haberdashery and vintage button store, are supporting the
Little Yellow Duck project – a global initiative to highlight life-saving random acts of kindness, like
donating blood, bone marrow, organ or tissue. On 30th April 2016, they will distribute hand knitted and
crocheted ducks around Portsmouth and Southsea.
The project was originally created by Emma Harris in memory of her best friend, Clare Cruickshank. Clare
was born with the genetic lung disease, cystic fibrosis, and by the age of 24, her lungs were so damaged
that a transplant was her only hope of survival. Sadly a matching donor was never found and despite a
long fight, she passed away aged 26.
The Little Yellow Duck Project was inspired by Clare, her sense of fun and her love of little yellow
rubber ducks. Each handcrafted little yellow duck gift aims to spread a little happiness to its
recipient and a little awareness of how we can transform the lives of others through blood, bone marrow,
organ or tissue donation.
Keep your eyes peeled on Twitter – Seeded will be tweeting locations of ducks on the day.
And if you’re feeling a little creative yourself, ducks are needed for this project all year round, so
get creating and leave them for others to find, or send to friends all over the globe. Here’s a link to
the patterns.
